Learn How to Make a Cork Bath Mat

You asked for it!

Last week, BrightNest Facebook users voted in droves on which DIY project they’d like to see next on the blog. The race was close, but this wine-cork bath mat nudged ahead of the competition in the final moments of the vote. Thanks for voting, and enjoy your stylish bath mats!

We like this guide by CraftyNest because they suggest using shelf liner for the bottom, which makes it so your mat won’t slip!

All you need for this unique mat is: shelf liner, hot glue, a knife and 175 wine corks. If vino isn’t your drink of choice, or you simply don’t want to work through so many bottles, visit a few neighborhood restaurants. Many bars toss their wine corks at the end of the night and would be happy to save a few for you!

Note: When collecting corks, it’s best to use wine corks that are a similar length and width.

1. Cut each cork in half lengthwise with a sharp knife. If any of the bottoms are jagged after they’ve been cut, use sandpaper to smooth them out.

2. Arrange your corks into a mat-shaped rectangle with the flat side down. Use a ruler to make sure your edges are straight.

3. Measure and cut your shelf liner with a ruler and scissors. Make sure that your shelf liner and your cork configuration are the same size. If you’re unsure, cut your shelf liner so that it’s bigger than the cork rectangle. You can always trim it down later.

4. Starting with the borders, begin gluing your corks to the liner with the flat side facing down. Press each cork down hard so that it sticks to the mat.

5. One by one, transfer the corks to their corresponding position on the mat and glue them into place.

6. Give your mat time to fully dry before placing it in the bathroom, then enjoy it!
